US moves to force AI partners to choose between Washington and Beijing

What's new: A draft State Department letter would bar countries from the US-led pact if they also join China's rival framework.

The United States is preparing to pressure dozens of countries to align their AI cooperation with Washington and avoid Beijing's rival framework, according to a draft State Department letter reviewed by Reuters. The letter targets 35 signatories of a June AI Opportunity Statement and warns that joining both camps would conflict with the US-led Pax Silica initiative. Washington launched Pax Silica last year to secure AI models, semiconductors and critical minerals. China responded in July when Xi Jinping introduced the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization. Kazakhstan, which has joined both efforts, appears to have triggered concern in Washington.
