US judge voids Trump’s $1.8 billion IRS immunity deal

What's next: The ruling could reopen IRS audits of Trump and his businesses and sent one of his lawyers to state bar authorities.

A federal judge in Miami voided President Donald Trump’s settlement with the Internal Revenue Service, striking down a deal that had shielded him and his companies from tax audits and had initially created a nearly $1.8 billion fund for alleged victims of government “weaponization.” US District Judge Kathleen Williams ruled that Trump and the IRS were not truly opposing parties, making the case improper under the Constitution. Her order bars Trump, his sons and the Trump Organization from citing the settlement in future cases. Williams also referred Trump lawyer Alejandro Brito and Justice Department officials who approved the deal to state bar authorities for possible ethics violations. The administration had already abandoned the compensation fund after a separate judge blocked it in June.
