US hits some Canadian goods with 50% tariffs after talks collapse

What's next: Canada plans retaliatory tariffs on Sept. 8, targeting steel, dairy, farm equipment, and pulp and paper.

The United States imposed 50% tariffs on some Canadian products Saturday after trade talks between Washington and Ottawa broke down a day earlier. The new duties affect about $20 billion in Canadian exports, including wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing rods and hockey equipment. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will answer with its own tariffs starting Sept. 8 and had been prepared to lift remaining duties on steel, aluminum and autos if the US reduced its measures. Carney said last-minute changes to US terms were unfair and raised doubts about any deal, while US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer blamed Canada for refusing to finalize an agreement.
