US hits Iranian coastal targets as Hormuz blockade resumes
What's new: Trump dropped a proposed 20% cargo fee, while US officials tied Iran to seven ship attacks in the past week.
The United States struck Iranian coastal defense, missile, drone and maritime targets Tuesday, then restored a naval blockade of Iranian ports around the Strait of Hormuz as a short-lived US-Iran ceasefire collapsed. US Central Command said the strikes were meant to weaken Iran’s ability to hit commercial shipping in the waterway, a route that handled about a fifth of globally traded oil and gas before the war. Iranian state media reported strikes on Qeshm island, Bandar Abbas and Sirik. US officials said Iran had attacked seven commercial ships in the past week, leaving about a dozen crew members dead, missing or hurt. President Donald Trump also scrapped a plan to charge ships fees equal to 20% of cargo value, pivoting instead to promised Gulf investment deals.
