US hits about 140 Iran targets as Hormuz fighting widens
Why it matters: Iran answered with attacks on Gulf states hosting US forces, putting oil and gas shipments and nuclear talks at greater risk.
The United States launched several waves of strikes on Iran, hitting about 140 targets after Tehran attacked commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. US officials said the targets included missile and air defense systems, drone and missile launch sites, ammunition dumps, communications equipment and Revolutionary Guard boats. Iranian media reported explosions on Qeshm island, in Bandar Abbas and in Sirik, while a local governor said military sites were struck with no casualties reported there. Iran then attacked Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Oman, widening the confrontation around the waterway and further straining talks meant to secure a permanent end to the war.
