US hits 140 targets in Iran after Hormuz ship attack ignites Gulf

Why it matters: Iran also fired at Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE after a container ship was set ablaze and a crew member went missing.

The United States struck about 140 targets in Iran early Sunday after an Iranian attack on a Cyprus-flagged container ship in the Strait of Hormuz set the vessel on fire and forced its crew to abandon it. U.S. Central Command said the M/V GFS Galaxy suffered heavy engine-room damage and that one civilian crew member is missing. Iran then launched attacks toward Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, widening the confrontation around the Gulf. Qatar said it intercepted incoming fire, while alerts sounded in Bahrain and blasts were heard near Qatar. The latest exchange deepens a dispute over shipping routes through Hormuz, a chokepoint that carried about a fifth of traded oil and gas before the war.
