US hits 140 Iran targets after Hormuz ship attack sparks reprisals

What's next: Iran struck U.S.-hosting Gulf states, raising the risk that talks over the waterway and the wider war could collapse.

The United States launched several waves of strikes on Iran after Iranian forces attacked a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, setting it on fire and leaving one crew member missing. U.S. Central Command said the strikes were meant to weaken Iran's ability to hit commercial shipping and targeted missile and air defense systems, Revolutionary Guard boats and other military sites. Iranian state media reported blasts in Qeshm, Bandar Abbas, Sirik and Hajiabad. Iran then fired at Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Oman, countries that host U.S. forces or sit near the waterway. Qatar said it intercepted several ballistic missiles. The exchange deepened a crisis around one of the world's key oil and gas routes and put the interim U.S.-Iran deal under growing strain.
