US hit Iranian coastal defenses as Trump threatened power grid strikes

What's next: Trump warned bridges and power plants could be targeted next week unless Tehran enters talks.

The US launched a new round of strikes on Iran early Wednesday, targeting coastal defense systems and cruise missile storage and launch sites near the Strait of Hormuz, including on Greater Tunb Island. US Central Command said the operation began at 6 a.m. ET and ended about 7:30 a.m. ET, describing it as an effort to weaken capabilities Iran has used against commercial shipping. Hours earlier, President Donald Trump warned the campaign would intensify and said Iranian power plants and bridges could be hit next week without progress in negotiations. The renewed attacks add to pressure on a ceasefire that Trump has said is over. Brent crude stayed above $85 a barrel as shipping risks in the waterway persisted.
