US hit 140 Iran targets after Strait ship attack ignited vessel
What's new: Iran then fired at Gulf states hosting US forces, while Washington and Tehran gave conflicting claims over whether the strait was open.
The United States struck about 140 targets in Iran early Sunday after Iranian fire hit a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, setting it ablaze and leaving one civilian crew member missing. US Central Command said the targets included missile and drone launch sites, ammunition dumps and communications equipment. Iranian media reported strikes in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm island and Sirik, and said a navy officer was killed. Tehran then launched attacks toward Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Oman; Qatari and Emirati authorities reported intercepting incoming missiles. The exchange deepened a dispute over the waterway's status, with Iran saying the strait was closed and the US military insisting commercial transits continued, though at reduced levels.
