US, Canada delay opening of $4.7 billion Detroit-Windsor bridge
Why it matters: The span would ease the busiest US-Canada truck crossing, handling freight valued at $126 billion in 2023.
The United States and Canada have delayed the opening of the $4.7 billion Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, days before a planned ribbon-cutting. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority said both countries agreed to take more time to resolve outstanding issues. The crossing had been expected to open in the coming days. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump threatened to block the bridge, citing disputes over Canadian alcohol sales, dairy tariffs and trade talks with China. The bridge is meant to reduce congestion at the privately owned Ambassador Bridge, the busiest freight crossing on the border. A University of Windsor study said it could cut crossing times by 20 minutes and save truckers $2.3 billion over 30 years.
