UMJ trains Sambas fisher cooperative to cut distribution chain
The Paloh cooperative plans to recruit jellyfish, lobster and salt fishers, plus seafood processors, to keep more value in the region.
The Center for Border and Coastal Studies at Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta (PSPP UMJ) trained managers and members of the Koperasi Pesisir Surya Samudera in Sebubus Village, Paloh District, Sambas Regency, on 22-24 August 2026, to improve cooperative governance and the marketing of marine products. The final phase of the Desa Berdikari pilot project with DEKS Bank Indonesia is aimed at shortening the distribution chain so more of the value from marine catches goes to fishers. The training covered Sambas marine-product potential, cooperative legalization and operations, and business and product licensing. The cooperative also plans to open membership recruitment for jellyfish, lobster and salt fishers in Sebubus and Temajuk, as well as small and medium enterprises that process fishery products.
