Ukrainian drone damages Moscow refinery as fuel caps spread in Russia

What's new: Tatneft limited fuel purchases nationwide after recent strikes disrupted supplies in about a dozen Russian regions.

A Ukrainian drone strike damaged a facility at the Moscow region’s largest refinery and briefly sparked a fire, widening pressure on Russia’s energy infrastructure and fuel supply. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the site was hit, while local emergency services said the fire was extinguished and refinery operations continued. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the Gazprom Neft plant was struck from 500 kilometers away. The refinery processed 11.6 million tons of oil in 2024, producing 2.9 million tons of gasoline and 3.2 million tons of diesel. Tatneft then imposed fuel purchase limits at stations across Russia, the first retailer to do so nationwide, after recent shortages caused long lines in Crimea and Krasnodar.
