UK urges households to stock 3 days of supplies for emergencies

Why it matters: The guidance reflects rising concern over cyberattacks, hostile states and severe weather disrupting power, water and internet service.

Britain has posted new guidance telling households to be ready to cope on their own for three days during a national emergency, a low-key shift toward stronger public preparedness messaging. The checklist, published on a government website on Oct. 22 alongside a statement to Parliament by Security Minister Dan Jarvis, advises people to keep bottled water, nonperishable food, cash, a flashlight, batteries, a radio, copies of key documents, blankets and warm clothing. Officials linked the move to risks ranging from severe storms, flooding and wildfires to cyber threats and hostile-state activity. The rollout came as the government tried to raise resilience without triggering panic after shortages seen early in the Covid-19 pandemic.
