UGM-UPN close probe into mysterious fire in Sleman home

UPN ruled out a link to gas bubbles in Sungai Nepen, while UGM found solvent and PVC resin may have created a flammable mix.

Researchers from UGM and UPN Veteran Yogyakarta have closed their investigation into repeated fires at the home of Mutfiana, also known as Fia, in Seyegan, Sleman. The UPN team said it found no connection between the fire at the house and gas bubbles in Sungai Nepen, about 250-300 meters from the site. Simple testing showed the gas from the bubbles was not easily flammable, although geoelectric, geomagnetic and geological mapping found porous rock layers and a fault beneath the area. Meanwhile, the UGM team concluded the fire was suspected to be linked to a chemical reaction between solvent material and polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, resin that created a flammable environment. Even so, the UGM team said an external ignition source was still needed. Sleman BPBD had earlier said it was still waiting for studies from other institutions before reaching a final conclusion.
