Uganda charges Besigye lawyer Erias Lukwago in treason case

What's new: Lukwago denied failing to report treason and was remanded after his arrest sparked outrage over the military chief's posts.

Ugandan authorities charged opposition lawyer Erias Lukwago with misprision of treason, escalating pressure on critics of President Yoweri Museveni's government. Lukwago, a former Kampala mayor who represents detained opposition figure Kizza Besigye, appeared in a Kampala court and denied failing to report treason. The court remanded him in custody until next week. His arrest days earlier drew condemnation after military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Museveni's son, posted online about Lukwago's seizure and shared images appearing to show him blindfolded. Lukwago's lawyer told reporters he had collapsed in detention after intense physical drills. Lukwago is also involved in a case in which Besigye sued Kainerugaba over repeated threats on social media.
