Tuas Power explores Laos hydropower imports rising to 500 MW
Why it matters: The proposed 5- to 15-year supply deal would support Singapore's push for cleaner power as demand may reach 13 GW by 2031.
Tuas Power signed an agreement with Laos state utility Electricite du Laos and developer Phongsupthavy Group to study long-term hydropower imports to Singapore that could reach 500 megawatts a year. Under the proposed structure, imports would start at 100 MW in the first year, rise to 300 MW in the second and then 500 MW annually over a five- to 15-year term. The deal was signed on the sidelines of Singapore International Energy Week. The companies said the electricity could be bundled with Renewable Energy Certificates. The plan would add to cross-border power trade in Southeast Asia as Singapore seeks lower-carbon supply and regional grid links under the Asean Power Grid vision.
