TSMC adds $100 billion to Arizona buildout as AI chip demand surges
What's new: The move lifts TSMC's Arizona pipeline to $265 billion, with a second fab nearing equipment move-in and a packaging plant planned.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is speeding up its Arizona expansion after committing another $100 billion to the project, betting that demand for AI chips will stay strong for years. Chief Financial Officer Wendell Huang said the new spending raises TSMC's total Arizona investment pipeline to $265 billion. The first Arizona fab is already operating with 4-nanometer technology, the second will soon begin moving in equipment, and work is under way on a third fab, a fourth fab and the site's first advanced packaging facility. Huang said U.S. construction costs run four to five times higher than in Taiwan and cited shortages of construction workers and infrastructure constraints in Arizona.
