Trump turns July 4 Mall event into rally for US 250th anniversary
Why it matters: The plan heightens scrutiny over using a federal celebration and public space for overt campaign-style politics.
President Donald Trump said a July 4 celebration on the National Mall for the 250th anniversary of American independence will also serve as a Trump rally, further mixing an official national commemoration with a political event. Trump wrote on Truth Social that the program would be the “most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all,” tied to the administration’s Freedom 250 push. He said the event between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument will feature military bands, flyovers and fireworks. The July 4 gathering is the centerpiece of the semiquincentennial celebrations. The move follows other Freedom 250 events that have drawn criticism, including a White House UFC event on June 14 and performer withdrawals from the Great American State Fair over its ties to Trump.
