Trump to meet 10 US refiners as gasoline tops $4 a gallon

Why it matters: The Sept. 1 meeting comes as fuel prices run about $1 above prewar levels and refinery capacity remains below 2020.

President Donald Trump is set to meet U.S. oil refining executives on Sept. 1 as the White House looks for ways to ease stubbornly high gasoline prices tied to the war in Iran. People familiar with the plan said representatives of at least 10 fuel makers and distributors were invited, including Marathon Petroleum, Delek US Holdings, Chevron, PBF Energy and Valero Energy. Gasoline averages more than $4 a gallon nationwide and diesel nearly $6, according to AAA, even after easing from a May peak above $4.50. Refiners are expected to press for policy changes to expand domestic processing capacity, which has fallen to about 18 million barrels a day from a 2020 peak of 19 million.
