Trump ties Taiwan to 30% share of Alaska LNG output for 20 years

What's new: The project still needs more binding sales to secure financing, with first gas targeted for 2029.

Donald Trump told a rally in Alaska that Taiwan agreed to buy 30% of the gas from the proposed Alaska LNG project for the next 20 years, a commitment he cast as key to making the venture viable. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Taiwan would invest $4.4 billion in the project, but the exact terms were not immediately clear and Taiwan's government did not confirm a final deal. Taiwan's state-owned CPC Corp signed an agreement in 2025 with Alaska Gasline Development to purchase LNG and invest in the pipeline. If built, the roughly $54 billion project would export as much as 20 million tons of LNG a year, and developer Glenfarne has said first gas is targeted for 2029.
