Trump threatens Oman with bombing over Strait of Hormuz talks

Why it matters: Iran and Oman say they have finalized a shipping map for the waterway, a key global energy route still under throttled traffic.

President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Oman if it "gets in the way" of a U.S. deal with Iran over the Strait of Hormuz, injecting fresh tension into negotiations over one of the world's most important shipping lanes. Trump made the remark in an interview with Fox News journalist Trey Yingst on Aug. 17, while also urging Iran to surrender. The threat came as Iranian and Omani officials worked on a joint declaration after weeks of talks on future navigation arrangements through the strait. Tehran said a shipping map had been finalized with Oman, though it warned that would not necessarily reopen the route. Iran has effectively closed the strait since Feb. 28, throttling traffic through a corridor that carries major global energy shipments.
