Trump stops short of backing Vance for a 2028 White House bid
What's new: After Vance said he expects Trump's support if he runs, Trump said it is too early and that Republicans must first get through the midterms.
President Donald Trump declined Tuesday to commit to endorsing Vice President JD Vance for president in 2028, undercutting Vance’s public prediction that he would have Trump’s support. In Oval Office remarks, Trump called Vance “a very talented person” and “a very good person” but said the question was premature and that Republicans need to get through the midterm elections first. Vance had said in a Monday interview with Mark Halperin that he has not decided whether to run, but believes Trump would back him if he does. He also said he has not discussed the matter with Trump and that the president could let a Republican primary play out.
