President Donald Trump is looking for a way to end the war with Iran as he weighs how a longer conflict could damage his presidency at home. NPR reported Trump has privately and publicly signaled interest in an agreement, while also framing the war through its potential effect on inflation, fuel costs and voters’ daily lives. At the June G7 summit in France, Trump invoked Herbert Hoover as the president he most wanted to avoid resembling, a sign he is focused on the domestic economic consequences as much as the military campaign. Historians told NPR that Hoover has long served as a warning for Republican presidents during periods of economic strain, making the comparison especially pointed as the war drags on.
