Trump says Xi will visit the U.S. in coming weeks
The comments came as Washington holds off on planned sanctions against Chinese banks over the Iran and Strait of Hormuz dispute.
U.S. President Donald Trump said China President Xi Jinping will visit the United States in the coming weeks, although no official schedule details have been released. He made the remark while praising Beijing for what he said was a limited role in the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump called Xi “relatively inactive” compared with what China could do on the issue. His comments also came after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated Washington would not target Chinese banks with sanctions. At the same time, Xi is carrying out a series of diplomatic trips, including attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, before other engagements expected to continue through September.
