Trump proposes renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean
The idea resurfaced at a Tennessee campaign event, but the U.S. cannot force other countries or global bodies to use it.
President Donald Trump revived an idea to rename the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean the “Trump Ocean” or the “American Ocean” as he neared the end of his term. He raised the proposal while speaking to supporters in Tennessee over the weekend. Trump said the name change should happen before he leaves office. CNN Indonesia reported that the U.S. government can change place names on domestic maps or in areas under its sovereignty, but it cannot compel other countries or international organizations to adopt the proposal. In recent months, Trump has also been reported to push for renaming several other places, including Lake Ontario.
