Trump presses Senate Republicans on voting bill and filibuster

Why it matters: GOP leaders say they lack the votes both to pass the SAVE America Act and to weaken the Senate filibuster.

President Donald Trump headed to Capitol Hill on Wednesday for a closed-door lunch with Senate Republicans as he pushed them to take up the SAVE America Act and scrap the filibuster to get it through. The bill would require proof of citizenship to vote, but it has already failed twice and Senate Majority Leader John Thune has repeatedly said there are not enough votes to change filibuster rules. The meeting comes after weeks of tension between Trump and Senate Republicans over how far the chamber can go on his agenda, with some in the party worried he could blame them if Democrats make gains in the midterm elections and the bill never passes.
