President Donald Trump urged Russia to reach a peace deal with Ukraine during talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the Group of Seven summit in Evian-les-Bains, France. Trump said he would do “whatever I can” to help end the war. Zelenskiy said the main focus was strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses and advancing diplomacy to force Russia to stop its invasion. European diplomats described the closed-door session as constructive and said leaders shared a view that Russia is now in a defensive position. European officials are also trying to persuade Trump that earlier U.S. ideas for a settlement were too favorable to Moscow as Kyiv seeks stronger backing before any peace negotiations.
