Trump launches veteran trucker push after 56,000 CDL removals

What's new: the plan lets some former military drivers skip skills tests and extends a fast-track CDL waiver to 24 months after service.

President Donald Trump is rolling out a White House campaign to steer military veterans into trucking as his administration removes immigrant and non-English-proficient drivers from the industry. The "Freedom Haulers" effort, backed by the Transportation, Veterans Affairs and Labor departments, will let some veterans who drove large military vehicles bypass the commercial skills test and will offer training to others during their final six months of active duty. Fox News reported the waiver window for expedited licenses will expand from 12 months to 24 months after service. The administration says about 26,000 drivers were sidelined over English proficiency and 30,000 commercial licenses were canceled after audits found improper issuance.
