Trump, Johnson race to lock in FISA 702 deal before Friday deadline
What's next: The Senate still needs 60 votes, and Bill Pulte's acting DNI role has complicated the push to avoid a first-ever lapse.
President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson met at the White House on Tuesday as Congress neared a Friday deadline to renew Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The surveillance authority lets the government collect communications of foreigners abroad, including exchanges with Americans, without a warrant. Johnson said the House had already passed a reauthorization bill in April and would take up whatever compromise the Senate sends back. The Senate faces a 60-vote threshold, and the effort has been slowed by opposition to Trump's choice of Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the White House is also weighing a longer-term nominee.
