Trump imposes additional 50% tariffs on some Canada imports
The duties take effect Aug. 19 and cover nearly US$20 billion in imports, but energy, potash, fish and critical minerals are exempt.
President of the United States Donald Trump signed three proclamations imposing additional 50 percent tariffs on some goods from Canada, including dairy products, alcoholic beverages, motor vehicles and related goods. According to White House documents, the levies take effect on Aug. 19, 2026 at 00:01 local time. USTR said the scope is close to US$20 billion, or about 5.2 percent of total U.S. goods imports from Canada in 2025. Several commodities are exempt, including energy, potash, fish, critical minerals and some goods already subject to sectoral tariffs. Trump based the move on allegations that Canada discriminates against U.S. exports, especially cars, alcohol and dairy products, amid uncertainty over the future of the USMCA trade agreement.
