Trump imposes 15% tariff on polysilicon goods to counter China

What's new: The measures take effect Dec. 4, and US solar stocks rose, with First Solar up more than 7% in premarket trading.

President Donald Trump imposed a 15% tariff and minimum price floors on imported products made from polysilicon, opening a new trade front aimed at China and at shoring up US solar and semiconductor supply chains. The White House used Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to justify the move on economic and national security grounds. Polysilicon is a key input for solar panels and semiconductors, and the administration argued that domestic production is needed for competition in artificial intelligence and energy. The protections are set to take effect Dec. 4. Markets reacted quickly: First Solar rose more than 7% in premarket trading, while the Invesco Solar ETF gained about 4%.
