Trump hit most Canadian goods with 50% tariffs, with 30-day delay

Why it matters: The levies would reach products once shielded by USMCA, while energy, potash, fish and critical minerals stay exempt.

President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods on Monday, escalating a trade fight with one of the United States' largest trading partners. The White House said the new duties take effect in 30 days and cover products that had previously been protected under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Energy products, potash, fish and critical minerals are excluded. Trump framed the move as a response to what he called unfair Canadian treatment of U.S. autos, alcohol and dairy. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa remains ready to negotiate, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged a tariff-for-tariff response if the measures proceed.
