Trump halts planned US strikes as interim Iran deal nears
Why it matters: The draft would ease pressure on Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz while leaving nuclear disputes for later talks.
President Donald Trump halted planned US strikes on Iran on June 11, reversing course hours after warning of a third straight night of attacks and tying the move to progress on an interim deal. Trump wrote on social media that the “final points” of an initial agreement had been approved and that details of a signing ceremony would follow, while keeping the naval blockade in place until any deal is finalized. Iranian media reported Tehran had not formally approved the text. Three Iranian sources cited by Reuters said a political understanding had been reached, but key details still had to be settled, including access to tens of billions of dollars in oil revenue frozen abroad. Questions over Iran’s nuclear program and stockpile of highly enriched uranium would be deferred.
