Trump halts housing bill signing, ties it to voter ID push

What's next: The measure could still become law in 10 days without Trump's signature unless he vetoes it or Congress adjourns.

President Donald Trump abruptly canceled a planned signing ceremony for a bipartisan housing bill and said he would withhold approval until Congress passes the SAVE America Act, a voter ID and citizenship-verification measure. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act had cleared both chambers with broad support, including a 358-32 House vote, after months of negotiations over housing supply and affordability. The package aims to expand homebuilding and lower costs, and Fox News reported it also would bar large institutional investors from buying single-family homes. Trump called the voter ID bill a "National Emergency," while some Republicans said they still expect him to sign the housing measure eventually.
