Trump delays 50% Canada tariffs for 3 days as trade deal nears
What's new: The pause halted duties on about $20 billion in goods just hours before they were due, though key terms remain unfinished.
President Donald Trump paused planned 50% tariffs on some Canadian imports for three days late Tuesday, less than two hours before the duties were set to take effect. The tariffs would have hit roughly $20 billion worth of goods, including wine, hockey sticks and other products, after the administration accused Canada of unfair trade practices affecting U.S. industries.
Trump wrote that the U.S. and Canada had a deal, pending final documents. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney struck a more cautious tone, saying substantial progress had been made but important work remained. Trump later said Canada had offered concessions, including lower retaliatory tariffs, and suggested the agreement could also touch autos, agriculture and the Keystone XL pipeline.
