Trump backs Lindsey Graham’s sister for South Carolina Senate seat
What’s next: Gov. Henry McMaster is set to name an interim senator as Republicans defend a narrow Senate majority and prepare for an Aug. 11 special primary.
President Donald Trump urged South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster to appoint Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, to fill his Senate seat through the rest of the year. Trump made the push after Graham died unexpectedly Saturday at 71. Under South Carolina law, McMaster can choose an interim replacement to serve until the end of the term, and he scheduled a Monday afternoon news conference to announce the pick. The vacancy comes as Republicans hold a slim Senate majority and as a crowded field weighs bids for the seat. A special Republican primary is set for Aug. 11, with the winner expected to face Democrat Annie Andrews in November.
