Trump backs Darline Graham for Senate race in South Carolina
What's next: Filing for the Aug. 11 Republican primary opens July 21, as funeral services for Lindsey Graham are set for July 28 and 29.
President Donald Trump threw his support behind Darline Graham for a full Senate term in South Carolina, reshaping the Republican race to succeed her late brother, Lindsey Graham. Trump posted Friday that she has his “Complete and Total Endorsement” if she runs, after previously floating support for Rep. Russell Fry. Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham this week to serve the rest of the term, which ends in January. Other Republicans weighing bids include Fry, Rep. Nancy Mace, Rep. Ralph Norman and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette. The filing period for the special primary runs from July 21 to July 28, with the primary set for Aug. 11. Funeral services for Lindsey Graham are planned in Washington on July 28 and in South Carolina on July 29.
