Trump-backed runoffs in Georgia and Alabama test his grip on GOP
Why it matters: Georgia candidate Rick Jackson has spent more than $100 million trying to beat Trump-backed Burt Jones.
Donald Trump's sway in Republican primaries faces a fresh test Tuesday as voters head to runoffs and primaries in Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, California and the District of Columbia. In Georgia, healthcare tycoon Rick Jackson is trying to overcome Trump's backing of Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in a gubernatorial runoff after Jones led the first round 38% to 33%. Jackson has poured more than $100 million into the race. In Alabama, Trump's support is also shaping the Republican runoff for an open Senate seat, where U.S. Rep. Barry Moore is trying to fend off an outsider challenge. The contests offer one of the clearest measures yet of whether Trump's endorsement still outweighs money, incumbency and anti-establishment appeals inside the GOP.
