Trump-backed Biggs, other election deniers win Arizona primaries

Arizona Republicans picked Trump-backed candidates for several top statewide offices, including U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs for governor and Alexander Kolodin for secretary of state, putting prominent 2020 election deniers on the November ballot in a key swing state. PBS reported that Warren Petersen also won the Republican primary for attorney general. Those posts carry unusual weight in Arizona because the governor, the state’s top elections officer and the attorney general all help oversee elections or defend voting laws. Biggs now faces Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, who won narrowly in 2022. The results suggest Trump’s endorsement still carries force with Arizona’s GOP base even as the general election will test whether those nominees can win over independents.
