Trump attacks New York primary wins by Mamdani-backed left
What's new: Three New York Democratic primary winners backed by Zohran Mamdani are now favored in heavily Democratic districts.
President Donald Trump lashed out after three New York Democratic primary candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won races that could send them to Congress from heavily Democratic districts. Trump, writing on Truth Social, called the candidates "Communists" and warned that blue states would "only get worse." The winners were Darializa Avila Chevalier in the 13th District, Claire Valdez in the 7th District and Brad Lander in the 10th District. Avila Chevalier defeated five-term Rep. Adriano Espaillat. Valdez and Avila Chevalier are members of the Democratic Socialists of America, while Lander is a former member who left in 2023 after a dispute over the group’s response to the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
