Trump approval drops to 33% as poll shows Democrats up 8 points

Why it matters: The survey found a split inside the GOP, with near-unanimous backing from MAGA Republicans but much weaker support from other Republicans.

A Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll put President Donald Trump’s approval rating at 33%, the lowest level of either of his terms, while Democrats held an 8-point edge heading into November. The discussion on PBS NewsHour highlighted how that weakness could weigh on Republican candidates in competitive races. NPR’s Tamara Keith said Trump had promised to visit 35 battleground districts but has traveled to fewer than a third of them since September, spending more time in heavily Republican areas. Carrie Dann of The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter pointed to a sharp divide inside the party: Trump’s approval stood at 94% among MAGA Republicans, but nearly half of Republicans outside that camp disapproved.
