Trump admits US ICC campaign aimed to protect Netanyahu

Rubio said five countries have moved to quit the ICC since Washington began pressure and sanctions threats this month.

US President Donald Trump acknowledged that Washington's campaign to weaken the International Criminal Court (ICC) is aimed at protecting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, not himself. At Camp David, Trump said there was no indication the ICC was targeting him, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the main goal of US pressure was to protect Netanyahu, others, and US military personnel from possible prosecution. Rubio also said five countries have announced plans to leave the ICC since the US began the campaign in July. The Trump administration argues the ICC threatens US sovereignty and is preparing lobbying, travel bans, and additional sanctions against officials and organizations linked to the court in The Hague.
