Trump accuses China of seizing 220 million U.S. voter records

The allegation conflicts with a 2021 U.S. intelligence assessment that found no foreign actor altered technical aspects of the election.

U.S. President Donald Trump accused China of interfering in the 2020 presidential election by obtaining 220 million U.S. voter files, including names, addresses and registration data. In a speech on Thursday (16/7), he said declassified intelligence documents showed a major breach and vulnerabilities in the election system. However, a 2021 assessment by the U.S. intelligence community concluded that no foreign actor tried or succeeded in altering the technical aspects of the 2020 vote, including voter registration, ballots, counting and results. The report was compiled when John Ratcliffe was in charge. A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the U.S., Liu Chang, rejected the accusation. Democratic Senator Mark Warner also dismissed Trump's claim and said U.S. intelligence agencies agreed China did not try to change a single vote.
