Typhoon Maysak triggers major flooding in Guangxi, 48,000 evacuated

Nanning raised flood alerts to the highest level after a reservoir embankment in Hengzhou was reported to have burst.

Typhoon Maysak triggered severe flooding in Guangxi, southern China, forcing at least 48,000 people to evacuate and killing two people by Monday night. In Nanning, the regional capital, authorities raised flood-control response to level I, the highest level, after extremely heavy rain caused rivers and reservoirs to overflow. Xinhua reported that one embankment at a medium-sized reservoir in Hengzhou broke, and nearby residents were evacuated. Reuters-verified footage also showed a road in Guigang turned into a large sheet of water, while in Fangchenggang a car was swept away by the current. Maysak first made landfall in Hainan on Friday as the first tropical cyclone to reach China this year, then made landfall again in Vietnam on Sunday before moving inland and weakening.
