Aceh peace figure condemns GAM flag-raising that sparked unrest
The episode revived separatist-symbol tensions during Aceh’s 21st peace anniversary in Banda Aceh and dampened the reconciliation mood.
Aceh peace negotiator from Finland, Juha Christensen, condemned the raising of the Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (GAM) flag that sparked unrest in the yard of Masjid Raya Baiturrahman, Banda Aceh, on Saturday. After attending the 21st Aceh Peace Day commemoration organized by Badan Reintegrasi Aceh at Balai Meuseuraya Aceh, he said the GAM flag should be respected as part of history, not used for other purposes. Juha said the action was not good for the peace atmosphere and ran counter to the spirit of the 2005 MoU Helsinki, which emphasizes dignity for all sides. He also urged the central government and former GAM not to raise sensitive issues that could disrupt peace. Juha said Aceh still trails other provinces and needs stronger political trust and a greater sense of security to attract investment.
