TNI deploys 2,700 troops for 6 new battalions in Papua Tengah
Troops began arriving on 9 October, but are still being housed in Nabire and Mimika while battalion bases in six regencies remain unfinished.
TNI is preparing 2,700 troops to fill six Territorial Development Battalions in Papua Tengah, each with 450 personnel. The additional troops are being readied for Dogiyai, Deiyai, Paniai, Puncak, Puncak Jaya, and Intan Jaya, six regencies that do not yet have similar battalions. Danrem 173/PVB Brigjen TNI Vivin Alvianto said personnel began arriving in stages on 9 October 2026 and are being temporarily stationed in Nabire and Mimika. Troops assigned to Dogiyai, Deiyai, and Paniai have partly arrived in Nabire, while those for Puncak, Puncak Jaya, and Intan Jaya have partly arrived in Mimika. The temporary placement is in place because the battalion headquarters in the destination regencies are not ready. TNI aims for each regency in Papua Tengah to eventually have one TP Battalion.
