Navy foils alleged illegal rare earth export in Batam
Officials are testing the cargo from TB Capricorn 106 and TK Capricorn 92.210 for radioactive elements and reviewing customs documents.
The Indonesian Navy foiled a suspected illegal export of rare earth metals in Batam waters, Riau Islands, after inspecting TB Capricorn 106 and TK Capricorn 92.210, which were flagged as suspicious during a patrol on 16 May 2026. The Navy said the cargo in dozens of containers was suspected to include items banned from export, as well as rare earth metals and other hazardous radioactive elements. KRI Kujang-642, operating under Guskamla Koarmada I, detected the movement of the two vessels. The Navy said details of the cargo content and any criminal status are still awaiting laboratory results, customs document checks, and a joint investigation with Jampidsus Kejaksaan Agung. The tug also is suspected of violating shipping rules.
