Thailand schoolboy, 9, chased teacher with machete after reprimand

What's next: child protection officials plan a multidisciplinary assessment as schools weigh safety measures and rehabilitation.

A 9-year-old student allegedly chased a primary school teacher with a machete at a school in Mueang district, Sakon Nakhon province, after she broke up an argument and reprimanded him on June 12. The boy was sent home and his parents were notified, but he later returned to the school carrying the blade and ran after the teacher, prompting panic among students. A school caretaker guided him toward an open area near the playground and persuaded him to put the weapon down. Local reports said the boy had a history of aggressive behavior, including bullying classmates, making threats and extorting money. Officials from the Sakon Nakhon Child Protection Home were contacted and are expected to send a team to assess the case and the boy's family background.
