Tesla to wind down Cybertruck output in Texas by mid-2027
What's next: Tesla plans to use the Austin factory space for higher Cybercab output as it pushes deeper into robotaxis.
Tesla plans to wind down Cybertruck production at its Austin, Texas, factory around the middle of 2027, shifting capacity toward its newly launched Cybercab. CEO Elon Musk wrote on X that the move would help Tesla raise output of the self-driving model, which he has made central to the company’s robotaxi strategy. Tesla has not made clear whether Cybertruck production will move elsewhere or end entirely. The pickup, launched in 2023, struggled to gain broad traction after delays, recalls and quality issues. Kelley Blue Book data cited by the BBC showed 2025 Cybertruck sales fell to 20,237 from 38,965 a year earlier, far below Musk’s earlier target of 250,000 a year.
