Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel dies after match collision
What's new: FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono said he is living the “hardest days” of his life as police pursue a routine inquiry.
Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel died Tuesday after suffering head and chest injuries in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second division match a day earlier. De Miguel, 30, was hurt as Owono rushed out to clear a long ball late in a 2-2 game and was later taken to a hospital, where his condition worsened.
Tenerife declared six days of official mourning, suspended club activities and said players, staff and officials will attend his funeral in Navahermosa, Toledo. A minute’s silence was observed before Champions League matches and will be repeated at European games this week. Spanish police opened a routine investigation because the death was non-natural, though the Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor said criminal proceedings were very unlikely.
